The last two days have been a blast! After work on Friday, I headed to Owatonna for the Steele County Free Fair (SCFF). My pal, Anna, is an Owatonna native, so she was the PERFECT host for my first ever SCFF. First we enjoyed dinner with her mom, dad, aunt, and cousin. Her extremely thoughtful mother even presented me with a gift!
Yes, that's right! A lovely pair of squirrel salt and pepper shakers. You know how much I love squirrels! And my VERY favorite kind of squirrel figurine = a squirrel holding a nut! Jackpot!
You may remember that Kim (Anna's mom) is the amazing lady who brought back Golden Eyes (my very, very favorite squirrel treasure in history) all the way from Florida at the end of 2012. I had seen Golden Eyes in an antique shop and instantly fell in love with his mysteriously alluring golden eyes and golden nut. But he was too heavy to bring home on the airplane.
Well it just so happened that Anna and her family ended up in the very same town for their Floridian vacation soon after. And Kim found golden eyes at the antique store and brought him all the way to Minnesota! Glorious!
Here are some pics from the fair:
Throughout the day on Saturday my mom and I headed over to Cascade Meadow Wetlands and Environmental Science Center for a day-long Natural Dyeing Workshop. Here's the brochure. Norrie and Leslie taught the class, and it was so educational!
We learned about a variety of natural materials (flowers, barks, roots, seeds, and more) that can be used for pigment to dye fabric. There was also substantial time allotted for experimentation and creative play. I'll show you what I made after it finishes drying. It was a wonderful afternoon, and I highly recommend you sign-up for the class when they offer it next.
Sidebar for locals: Be sure to get on over to Cascade Meadow Wetlands and Environmental Science Center to explore! There are 3 miles of trails and a variety of interesting indoor displays. It's a fascinating, beautiful place.
I hope you're having a great weekend!
Cool! My housemate and her sister (both from Owatonna) did the Fair on Friday also, and had a great time walking around and meeting up with friends.
ReplyDeleteCascade Meadow Wetlands and Environmental Science Center is great. I've toured inside exhibits and taken some classes there, but haven't done the outside hikes yet .......... on the "to do" list.
