Diaries of a Pastoral Fashionista

pastoral fashionista

I have a fashion confession. I am an over-dresser.

I adore dressing up. Generally, this love of dressing up does not cause much drama in my life because my job allows for me to be as dressed up as I like to be. In general, dresses are my best friends. Skirts are my acquaintances. And shorts and jeans are my least favorite of items. I have historically had what is called a "shorts complex."

I am not sure why (probably my spider veins and cellulite), but I usually don't like wearing shorts. So until last Friday night, I think I'd only worn shorts once or twice all summer!

But Friday I thought to myself, "Emily, it's 94 degrees and you're going to a baseball game. If you wear a dress to a baseball game in front of your potential new friends, they will think you are a silly goose. You have to find something casual to wear!"

And then I thought, "Oh no! Does this mean I have to wear shorts?"

And then I thought, "Emily, embrace those spider veins in your legs! You inherited them from your grandmas! And you love your grandmas!"

My final thought was, "Okay. I'll wear shorts. But if I wear shorts, then I definitely need to pair them with a cute top! And I definitely need to wear wedges or heels!"

Summer Attempt 2

Wedges and Toes

When it comes to choosing the right top, my advice is this: find shirts that fit! Men and women, this is a universal tip. Really. Try. You don't need to wear a belt with your shirt if you don't want to. You don't need to wear a certain style of shirt. Just make sure it fits. Too big is not good. Too small is not good. Try things on at the store. Try things on in your closet. If it doesn't fit, don't wear it.

And, as always, remember this: a good fashion sense is not as much about the clothing items themselves but is instead about confidence and class!

Be bold! You're beautiful (or handsome)!

  1. The older I get, the more I dislike wearing shorts. But I have discovered bermuda shorts and I love them! They are long enough to cover up icky parts of my legs but still comfy shorts!

I am an over-dresser too, Emily. I feel your pain! But knowing I'm the most fabulously dressed person at an event is kind of fun too. :)

  2. I hear ya! I wear a lot of skirts in the summer because I have a big ol' nasty varicose vein in my right leg. I blame it on 4 kids! I do wear shorts, though. Who cares, right? Life is too short to worry about spider veins or varicose veins! :)

    Thanks for the tips!

P.S. You look good in whatever you wear - shorts included!
