The wedding went wonderfully today.
It really did.
Very lovely.
And now, here's a funny story from the parking lot of the hotel where the reception was held.
As I was walking out from the reception, I noticed a gentleman behind me with a black shirt on that said "GROOM" in big white letters.
"Hey, you want to join us?" he said to the back of my head.
I turned around. Revealing that in addition to my skirt and jacket, I was also wearing a pastoral collar. *gasp*
"Join you?" I repeated.
"Oh, I....well....we're all going out tonight.....uh......do you want to come?" he stammered nervously.
Out in the parking lot there was a huge mass of people. All the boys had shirts on that said "Friend of the Groom" and all the girls had shirts on that said "Friend of the Bride." They were all loading on to a great big bus for a night on the town for a Bachelor/Bachelorette party.
"Oh, thank you," I said, "I actually just presided at a wedding."
We approached the mass of people as I kept walking to the car.
The parking lot was quite dark. The people said, "Hey, come out with us" and things of that nature. The groom, now aware of my vocation, directed them all, whispering loudly, "Hey, she's a pastor." Of course, they all yelled silly and obnoxious things.
I got into my car, smiling at all the awkward situations this pastoral collar has gotten me into. As I was driving by the bus and its passengers, a gentleman from the group came over to my car window.
"Hey, you're not really a pastor are you?" he said, with a confused look.
"Yes, I really am," I said smiling.
He looked into the car. "I bet you have rap on your CD player," he said, laughing.
"Well, I do really like T-Pain," I proclaimed with a smile.
He smiled. "Me, too. I do, too."
"Have a good night," I said.
"You, too," he said.
How about that? T-Pain, hip-hop extraordinare, bringing people together again.
Thank you for that. :) It is so nice to know of other women clergy who have equally awkward moments as I do!
ReplyDeleteThat's what you get for being a hottie with a collar! ;)
