There's Nothing Like the Library

It has been a cloudy, cool, and totally terrific Tuesday. I got to see a delightful friend, take a wonderful walk to the lake, eat a delicious baked potato at one of my favorite local restaurants, and spend 2 hours at the seminary’s library. Since my employment at the library ended at the time of graduation in mid-May, I haven’t spent much time at the library. My how I have missed it! This afternoon I found my way to the periodicals department and browsed for hours. There are so many amazing magazines and journals. It was a gift to soak in pages and pages of words. It felt lovely to consume and digest so much insight and brilliance from writers around the world. In the future I want to make time to do this every week - no matter where I end up or what my schedule is like.

It occurred to me this afternoon that while I strive to be a well-read person, I sometimes forget how one becomes well-read. It is (not so surprisingly) not through watching hours of brain-sucking television or checking Facebook 1,000 times a day! One becomes well-read and culturally literate through (gasp) reading! Why do I forget and avoid this reality? Attached are some pictures - one is of a very thought-provoking poem called “Dandelions.” I think you’ll enjoy it.

What are your favorite magazines, newspapers, and journals?

  1. I love my Real Simple, and for some unexplained reason I've been on a Business Week kick ever since scoring a free subscription.

And of course I read the Indy Star since it puts a roof over my head and food on my table.
