Cheese Talk

It's cheese time. Have you ever heard of the Nordic Creamery? They are based in Wisconsin, and for the full scoop on this family-owned and operated business, click here.

As some of you know, I've spent some time in life as a vegan who avoided both meat and dairy.  In general, I am not a huge dairy-eater, but from time to time, I really enjoy it. Recently, I had a Wisconsin cheese plate at The Wine Guyz. Quite tasty. It included slices of mild and aged cheddar cheese.  Wonderful!

After eating the cheese plate, there was a beer and cheese tasting taking place.  That's when I met Tim who works for Nordic Creamery and was facilitating the tasting.  It was so neat to learn more about cheese!  And I even got to try some Capriko which is (quoting from the company website):
Capriko Cheese is a perfect blend of fresh Goat and Cow's Milk. Handcrafted semi-hard cheese with a smooth sweet nutty flavor. Great for eating and cooking.
I do not have a mature cheese palate. My usual words to describe cheese are either "good" or "not-so-good."  This particular cheese was "good" and "unique." The goat/cow blend is really delicious.  And I've enjoyed eating a slice or two a day for a special treat!  Eating it so slowly means I'll be savoring my little block of cheese.

Some people eat their cheese in fancy ways.  I do not.  I like my cheese with Special K Cracker Chips, Popchips, hummus, and diet Sierra mist. I also like my cheese on gluten free bread with lettuce and tomato.

I'd love to try some of their butter, and that's also something I know nearly nothing about.  Do you know anything about butter?

So next time you're in the market for some cheese, I encourage you to pause and explore the different brands.  If Nordic Creamery products are available, those are a terrific option.  If they aren't available, there are so many other good options! Is there a local cheese/dairy farmer you can support?  Is there a way to learn more about the product?  Does your local Farmer's Market have any dairy options available?

Now it's your turn!  What kind of cheeses do you like?
What are your favorite ways to eat cheese?

This week's word is rain!  I'd love a photo from you by Friday morning.

Another quick question:

When do you run?

I went for a run last night and realized I am WAY OUT OF RUNNING condition.  I exercise a few times a week, but it isn't ever running.  It's usually a 20-minute exercise DVD or a walk.  What is your favorite time of day to run?

  1. Thanks for the mention! I am so glad that you are enjoying your Capriko cheese. We always like to hear when folks enjoy our cheese. That's why we make it!

If you are looking to change the way you think about butter, try our Cultured Butter with Sea Salt. This European style butter is so rich and delicious that you will never go back to “plain” butter. We also make a fun selection of flavored butters.

If your readers are looking for our products they should start in their local Coop or fine food emporium. We are all over the Midwest. You can also find some of the shops that carry our award-winning cheeses and butters on our website here, or buy directly from us online!

    Enjoy,
    Tim – Nordic Creamery
