The Column: Behind the Scenes

My Post-Bulletin column this week is about imagination.

In it I tell the story of visiting a kindergarten classroom.
Last week when I visited, we practiced letters.
One young lady had an amazing imagination.

Today when I visited, we practiced shapes!

In case you may need a quick refresher (I did)....

blue: rhombus
orange: square
yellow: hexagon
red: trapezoid
green: triangle

:)

I seriously need to start doing more shape reviewing!
I hardly ever use the word trapezoid in my daily life.
The time has come.
I officially declare 2014 as the year of the trapezoid.

In the column, I mention how being around young people often inspires me to use my imagination. And then last night I experienced another amazing example of this at confirmation.

Last night we spent the evening diving into the beautiful world of the Holy Spirit.
We talked about Pentecost (Acts, Chapter 2), and I showed the kids the following artwork....

If you perform a Google image search for "Pentecost" you'll see an amazing collection!

During large group time, we also talked about the role of the Holy Spirit in a baptism. I explained that during a baptism, the pastor says a prayer for the person being baptized. We pray:

Sustain _________ (insert name) with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence both now and forever. Amen.

Then a 7th grader raised his hand.
"So I have a question about that."

"Sure," I said. "Go for it."

"Well, during the baptism, do you really imagine the Holy Spirit coming down and into the baby?"

He literally used the word "imagine"!

And isn't that a great question?!?! Why am I not doing that? I love that prayer and I love that moment in a baptism. But I don't often truly imagine what's really happening. But I will now - I will imagine the Holy Spirit breaking forth into that moment and pouring giftedness upon the child.

"I sure will now," I said. "That's a great idea!"

Question of the day: How has the Holy Spirit been leading and guiding in your life lately?
